In the realm of large CNC machining, processing a reducer housing is one of the most demanding tasks. This component is not just an enclosure; it is the structural backbone that ensures gear alignment under massive torque. We recently completed a precision housing machining project for a series of heavy-duty reducers used in rotary kilns and mining machinery.
1. Project Overview & Industrial Application
This specific housing machining project involved a robust, thick-walled cast structure designed for the harshest environments.
Applications: Cement rotary kilns, mining conveyors, and large-scale marine propulsion.
Core Function: The housing features multiple large-diameter bearing bores, specifically engineered to withstand extreme loads and 24/7 continuous operation.

2. Technical Specifications & Precision Requirements
Executing large CNC machining on such a scale requires both specialized equipment and deep technical expertise:
Dimensions: Approximately 2200mm × 1500mm × 1200mm, weighing several tons.
Machining Scope: Complex housing machining involving main bearing bores from Φ400mm to Φ600mm.
Surface Finish: All mounting surfaces and bearing seats were finished to Ra 1.6μm, ensuring a perfect seal and fit.
3. Key Challenges in Large-Scale Housing Machining
To ensure the success of this large CNC machining project, our engineering team overcame several critical “pain points”:
A. Maintaining Coaxiality Across a 2-Meter Span In heavy housing machining, maintaining the alignment of multiple bores is vital. Over a long span, even microscopic tool deflection can ruin the part. We utilized a floor-type boring machine and a single-setup approach to keep coaxiality within 0.03mm.
B. Managing Internal Stress in Thick Castings During the large CNC machining process, removing heavy layers of metal can cause the casting to warp. We implemented a “Roughing — Stress Relief — Finishing” cycle to ensure the housing remained dimensionally stable throughout the entire housing machining sequence.
C. Vibration Control for Superior Surface Quality Large-diameter boring often causes chatter. By using custom anti-vibration bars and optimized cutting parameters, we achieved a mirror-like finish inside the bearing seats, which is a hallmark of high-quality housing machining.
