How does Sheet Metal Bending work?

Our sheet metal bending service involves the precision shaping and bending of thin metal sheets. Using advanced equipment and techniques, we can accurately bend sheets of various metals, such as steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. Most parts created through our sheet metal bending service are made by overhead bending, bending in the die, and pressing etc. The operation is based on the same principle: the tooling presses the workpiece into the lower die of the concave die.

Overhead Sheet Metal Bending

The tooling presses the metal part into the concave die without pressing it against the die wall. During the downward movement of the tooling, the workpiece edge bends upward and forms a pinch angle. The deeper the tooling presses the metal workpiece into the die, the smaller the angle will be. At this point, there is a gap between the tooling and the die. Overhead bending is also known as a path-dependent process. Each type of clamping angle requires a specific path.

Metal Sheet Bending in the die

The tooling presses the workpiece completely into the die, so there is no gap between the die, the workpiece, and the core. This process is called die closing. The tooling and the die must fit precisely into each other. Therefore, a custom mold is needed for each clamping angle and shape. Once the workpiece is fully pressed in, the tooling cannot move further down. The CNC machine control system continues to increase the punching force until the specified value is reached. The pressure applied to the workpiece rises and results in a contour created by tooling and die. The clamping angle gradually stabilizes due to the high pressure, and completely eliminating the backlash problem.

Overturn Bending

The built-in bending arm of the CNC bending machine consists of a C-shaped profile on which the lower and upper bending dies are mounted. The C-shaped profiles move up or down, or a small range of elliptical movement during the custom metal forming process, that is flip. The semi-automatic swing-arm bending machine is known for its speed and flexibility, which is suitable for small batches custom sheet metal bending service projects. In addition, the overturn bending technique makes it more efficient when bending multiple radius sizes on a single part using the same tool.

Folding and Pressing

The edges of the sheet metal are usually completely bent (e.g., box edges) and folded making it parallel to each other. The finished part is thus more stable forming an edge guard. The folded edges then usually need to be hung with other parts. The folding and pressing are done in two steps: first, the operator pre-folds the 30° angle, re-input the part pressed with the angle. If there is a gap between the edges, it is called a fold. The curved edges are then completely squeezed against each other in the press fit. While folding is path-dependent, pressing is force-dependent.

Understanding K-Factor in Sheet Metal Bending

The K-factor is a critical element in sheet metal design, defining the ratio of the neutral layer position (t) to the overall material thickness (T) of a sheet metal part, expressed as K = t / T. Accurately selecting and applying the K-factor is essential for the precision and performance of parts (like grain buckets , enclosure, cabinet, metal housing parts, etc) produced by our sheet metal bending service.

In the context of our sheet metal bending service, the K-factor ensures that designs are accurately translated into precise, high-quality parts. It varies with material type and thickness, influencing the bend allowance calculations necessary for successful fabrication.

K-Factor Variation with Material Thickness

For steel materials of varying thicknesses, an appropriate K-factor ensures design accuracy and bending stability. Thicker steel plates (2.0mm to 4.0mm) have a lower K-factor, positioning the neutral axis closer to the material’s center and requiring less bend deduction. Conversely, thinner plates (0.8mm to 1.2mm) have a higher K-factor, with the neutral axis closer to the surface, necessitating greater deductions to prevent overbending.

Practical Application in Design

Designers are advised to utilize charts or tables for quick reference of K-factor values corresponding to different material thicknesses. Adjusting deductions based on the actual bending process, angle, tool selection, and material properties is crucial. While standard calculation methods suggest a K-factor of 1.66 times the material thickness, adjustments may be necessary for specific applications in our sheet metal bending service.

Recommended K-Factor Values
